March 17th, Slice of LIfe # 17I’m trying to be Happy
Even though I’m not Irish, when St. Patrick’s Day comes along, it is a day for celebration. Blessings are all around us, and the color of green is more than a sign of spring. We have corned beef & cabbage, soda bread, & cookies with green sprinkles. Then I read the newspaper, & try not to worry too much, but I do anyway. So-I make a poem. It helps.
TEACHERS PENSIONS SCRUTINIZED
JAPAN OFFICIAL RUES DISASTER, BOWS TO NATURE
FORKING OVER MORE FOR FOOD
LARGER CLASSES, FEWER TEACHERS IN ADAMS 12 CUTS
LIBYAN WARPLANES HIT REBEL STRONGHOLD
SPORTS PROGRAMS IN MIDDLE SCHOOLS CANCELED
However, the second verse lightens me up, gives hope. I am glad for my newspaper that looks for more than disaster.
HOPE ENDURES IN HUNT FOR MISSING
SPACE STATION CREW BACK HOME
PAKISTAN RELEASES AMERICAN
GRAND COUNTY ELEMENTARIES SPARED
NUGGETS THRIVE ON WINNING VIBE
A SPRINKLING OF SPRING

Poetry from headlines, sounds like a good activity to use in the classroom. I may have to try it. News is depressing, glad you were able to find some with encouragement. I would guess this fits under the category of found poetry.

ReplyDeleteSuch a creative and neat idea of the headlines for poetry. I think I might try this myself - add it to my list of styles to try. Never thought of this. A great way to use expression. As one might say, "Don't worry, be happy!". I don't tend to read the paper or watch the news much because I get too worried about all the 'bad' things happening and being discussed. Glad your poem balanced the positive with the negative.

ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! I love the idea of found poetry. I remember a song where the lyrics were bits of advertising slogans put together for humor. I like your arrangement of what you found. You juxtapose the near and the far to catch two visions of the world in your poetic net! Nice slice.
ReplyDeleteInteresting method. Must give it a go sometime! Wouldn't it be nice to have a day where the headlines were all positives? The positives seem to get smaller text and shorter write-ups.
