Slice Number 28 with Stacey and Ruth at the Two Writing Teachers March SOLC
Three more times in the challenge!
While I have an audience of some count (as The Great Gilly Hopkins said, actually about books, in the book by Katherine Paterson), I want to say a bit about apples, yes that tasty Malus domestica. Did you know they were in the rose family? Lovely!
I am convinced that apples keep me healthy. I eat at least one apple every day for lunch, sliced with peanut butter spread on them and on four Ritz crackers. I know, I know, it might be boring, but it keeps me filled for all the rest of the day, and I just love APPLES. I love Granny Smiths, Pink Ladies (a favorite), Cameos, McIntosh and Fuji’s. They are a prime source of vitamin C, have no fat, no cholesterol and little sodium. They are a good source of fiber. And they taste great.
But you’ll have to discover more history yourself. This is about eating apples. At school, I eat with friends or at my computer, but at home I eat with the squirrels. I have several who visit my back yard by the park and I feed them peanuts and the core of my apple plus one sliced apple every day I’m home. They sometimes wait if they know I’ve been home, and they know that if I work in the yard for a bit before lunch. Then, around lunchtime, I see them lurking around, waiting. I fix my lunch, and that for the squirrels, with peanuts thrown in too.
And then I put the treats out, and they start darting and jumping around, happy to be a part of this lunch. It’s a way of knowing I’m doing something good. Can’t let those squirrels starve! From knowing apples are good for me, to feeding those cute squirrels in my back yard, I am keeping the orchard growers happy too, I hope.
See the apple slice? |
This was a great apple slice! As I read, I pictured myself sitting outside in the cool Spring weather feeding squirrels as they scurried along. I live in Hawaii, so there are no squirrels, but I remember becoming so excited as a young girl when we'd visit family on the mainland and see squirrels. By the way, I love apples, too... especially with peanut butter.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!

I enjoyed your apple slice - what a clever play on words. We don't have squirrels here to feed but have the intrest of a family of magpies if you happen to be eating lunch outside on a sunny day. They are more furtive than your squirrels and will search for the scraps after we leave. Pink Ladies are the apple of choice in this household but Royal Gala are a close second
ReplyDeleteYou know what they say..an apple a day keeps the doctor away! :) I like how you said that you eat with squirrels at home. I'm reminded of the story of Johnny Appleseed that I was reading with a student a few weeks ago.
ReplyDeleteCortlands are my favorite and I agree with you...I love apples. I share mine with my dog Holly. She waits very patiently as I eat a slice and toss one to her. She always gets a least a quarter. A peanut butter apple makes a great breakfast, lunch, or just a snack. Peanut butter and apples are always in my cupboard and on the counter:) Love the description of you sharing with the squirrels.
ReplyDeleteLove the picture of the squirrel with the apple slice. MMM, you make me hungry for apples.
ReplyDeleteAren't those squirrels funny? I bet they miss you when the snow flies and you are not out back with your apples (and peanuts) for them. You are a caretaker, even the apple farmers and squirrels.
ReplyDeleteLove this apple slice, so clever! And the picture of the squirrel with the slice was adorable.
ReplyDeleteYou are brave to feed those squirrels. The group that frequent my backyard are so bold, if I fed them they might want to come in and sit at the table!
ReplyDeleteI eat my apples and peanut butter for breakfast...and you're right. They keep you filled up! I loved this slice---and the picture of the squirrel with the slice. What a fun thing to share today! Hope all is well.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the spring treat! I loved hearing about feeding the squirrels. We used to keep a dried cob of corn on a feeder out back and when we were in-town, we had lots of squirrel visitors to watch, but for some reason out here in the coastal woods, we have none. We're more of a turkey and deer area now.
ReplyDeleteOh, and sorry for tricking you yesterday! I had to make sure my SOL post started with "I am fine!" I didn't want to make people panic, but the situation was so like a real doctor's office - including the sign - that I HAD to write it.
I, on the other hand, do not like squirrels...as we had one come down our furnace one year-all black and burned. I do, however, like your squirrel, who seems so cute and harmless!
ReplyDeleteLove hearing about your squirrel friends. At the last school I worked at, my friend Dawn, kept corn in her trunk for the squirrels. Her car looked very similar to mine, so every time I drove up, I had a greeting committee! I'm a teeny bit afraid of squirrels…
ReplyDeleteOk, you just made me reeeeeeally hungry for apple slices with PB on them!!! And I LOVE the picture of your squirrel friend with his apple! :-) Last week I had a squirrel friend who visited me on the corner of our patio every day when I sat outside!
ReplyDeletePink Ladies are my favorites, too. Although I love English apples - they are much smaller and have ( to me) such distinctive and subtle varieties.

ReplyDeleteLook at the squirrel. He must've been so proud of his accomplishment.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE pink ladies. Lately I've been seeking out organic Fujis and Pinata apples (the latter of the two are new to me).
That picture of the squirrel is incredible. I might have to slice about the squirrel I met on Spring break, so thanks for the reminder about that story. Any way, I love how you share your love of apples with us and literally with the squirrels. I am sure they are trained and waiting for you.
ReplyDeleteApples and peanut butter and ice cream were my younger sister's favorite after school snack. Great Memories!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great SOL story about slices!
ReplyDeleteLove this! I've done exactly the same things -- eating apple slices with peanut butter for days on end, fed peanuts to the squirrels who actually waited for me at the top of the kitchen bannister every day until I threw out some peanuts for them. And I've watched many squirrels with an apple on a branch just like your photo! Once I threw an apple outside the front door for the deer, and it magically appeared on a tree limb in the back yard. The squirrels were mocking me.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first started blogging, I had an Apple Month, where I wrote about folklore and apple books and apple recipes. Fun!
Apples are little miracles, and I love peanut butter on my slices, too. I never had Pink Ladies though--will look for them.
ReplyDeleteA slice about slices --- I love it.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great "slice" the picture is fabulous too. I could just picture your guests lurking and waiting. You made me laugh out loud.
ReplyDeleteI love that you shared a slice of your apple love with us. Apples have become increasingly important in my life as my husband LOVES them, but is very particular about which kind. I remember, early in our marriage, finding beautiful apples and returning home very excited to show him only to realize that, once again, I had purchased the wrong kind. I have finally gotten it figured out. Your apple slice made me smile.
