Past Competition

Almost the last day of Poetry Month

"Poetry is plucking at the heartstrings, and making music with them." Dennis Gabor
Don't forget to look to the right to see whose turn it is to add a line to the 2nd Annual Progressive Poem, the idea created by Irene Latham at Live Your Poem.  Then head over to see how it's going! Nearly complete!

             A giveaway to note!  Visit the Teaching Authors website for a terrific giveaway.

            And visit Mary Lee Hahn at A Year of Readingand her wonderful April posts/poems.

           If you didn't discover March Madness Poetry back in March, you missed an amazing group of people writing furiously for Ed DiCaria's idea of poetry madness along with the basketball frenzy too.  Here at the end of Poetry Month, I thought I should post my 'competition' poem, sadly losing to Renee La Tulippe of the blog, No Water River.  She did very well in the competition, almost making it to the finals!  We were each given a word and 48 hours in which to write.   Readers voted.

          My word was random.  We were restricted to 8 lines. Here is my poem:

           Appreciation

Darwin sailed across the sea
saw nothing random,
                                   just naturally
derived species selection,
through careful observation.

Onto the land a creature came;
it scuffed on sand first without name.
Darwin said, “Try to understand
these unique qualities of man.”
