On April 1st,
Laura Purdie Salas’ new poetry picture book, Water Can Be, will arrive on your doorstep if you pre-order
now! You can find all about Laura here at her website. You can find her blog, Writing
The World for Kids, information for writers, for teachers, for
students, and for visits to your classroom. Most recently, Laura became a new "teaching author" at the blog, TeachingAuthors. She is a busy writer, and writes wonderful books for children.
Among other books, Laura is most recently the
author of the similar book out in 2012, A
Leaf Can Be, receiver of numerous awards. A few months before, Bookspeak: Poems About Books, was
also published, and is also the recipient of many awards.
Water Can Be, Laura’s new book, is
filled with all the delight one can create when thinking about water. There are real things shown, like “tadpole
catcher” and more abstract ideas, like “picture catcher” (looking at a reflection in a puddle). After enjoying the book for its beauty, I
also imagine using it as a mentor text for writing about the uses of
other things in life. Children’s imaginations will soar after reading this book.
I adored A Leaf Can Be, both Laura’s
clever words, and Violeta Dabija’s gorgeous illustrations, and Water Can Be is as beautiful and
informative. Both books should be in every classroom that studies nature and
wants especially to emphasize its beauty and importance. I remember someone told me once that our
planet should be named “water” instead of “earth”. Although about 70% of the
earth’s surface is covered with water, only 2% of that is drinkable. Water is
vital to survival, and clean water is something not everyone on earth can
depend upon. For that reason, Laura is donating 10% of her royalties to a group
that works hard to get clean water to those in need: Water Aid. Here is one of the book trailers for the book:

ReplyDeleteThank you Freeda, love hearing that, but also that you liked this new book!
DeleteThis title looks stunning. I have A Leaf Can Be so I would love to add this to my collection. Looks like a book that can be used in a variety of ways - besides just being a beautiful book!
ReplyDeleteAs I said briefly above, yes, it can "be" many things in the classroom, Carrie! I love A Leaf Can Be too!
DeleteI've been waiting for my library to get a copy, and they still don't, so you convinced me to pre-order this one! I have a couple of other water sources that I will pair it with - NewsELA had a water shortage article this week and I'm also going to use the book "One Well" by Rochelle Strauss. Thanks for showing this book, I needed one more convincing reason to get it :)
ReplyDeleteIt's not out until April 1st, Michelle, very soon. I hope you'll urge your library to add a copy to their collection. Happy you'll have your own copy too. Thanks for the titles-I think I will start a 'water' list!
DeleteThanks for the book review and short clip. I enjoy hearing water especially since everything has been so frozen this year!!! Looks like these books take you to another dimension of the simple things of nature.
ReplyDeleteYes, there is an added beauty to them because of Laura's creative use of words and rhyme, and the fabulous illustrations! Thanks Tam!
