Gorgeous, right? Straight from Robyn's wonderful workplace! |
August
is the whispering of wind
fingering its way toward you from fall.
Bright sun beams down from buses and backpacks
but not forever.
See that leaf, with the tiniest hint of something other than green?
It's pointing toward September. October. Beyond.
Pointing to you. And the person you'll grow into.
August, still August, is not really still
at all.

I loved getting these poems this summer and writing them! I lve the idea the August is not really still.
ReplyDeleteI've loved the swap poems, too, Jone. Summer was better because of them, wasn't it? And I agree, August has become our transitional month.
DeleteReally lovely. *happy sigh*
ReplyDeleteThanks, Tabatha, yes, you're right!
DeleteLove this breezy poem, Linda. Sorry to hear Robyn hurt her shoulder.
DeleteThanks, Catherine. It's a wonderful response to this time of year, isn't it?
DeleteThank you for sharing, Linda - and I'm glad I got this mailed right before the trip that was the final straw for my shoulder/arm! (I'm clunkily typing with my left hand.) Wishing you a lovely, inspiring year in and out of the classroom. xo
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Robyn. I am thrilled to share, know that everyone will love seeing these thoughts from you! Take care of yourself!
DeleteHow lovely -- especially because just yesterday I noted some already yellow leaves falling from one of our trees. Happy New School Year!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jama, back we are! The exciting part is next week, however, when the kids arrive!
DeleteWhat a beautiful poem, Linda; and you're right, perfect for delivering you into a new school year. I'm so glad you and Diane have been kind enough to give us our Robyn fix while she's recovering.
ReplyDeleteI guess you could say Robyn really wasn't absent, couldn't you? I will enjoy Robyn's words well into winter, I'm sure! Thanks, Michelle.
DeleteThe hopefulness in the tiny hint of color on a leaf. August marches on, oppressive, hot, and humid. Oh, the hope of cooler air. A beautiful summer swap gift.
ReplyDeleteYes, indeed. I'm sure you still have the heat, but it's rainy and cool here today. I know the 90s will return, but more & more, the weather's changing. Hoping for you, too, Margaret!
DeleteLove the idea of August pointing to growth even when there's a hint of color change. What a gift to start the year with.
ReplyDeleteIt's been cooler here lately, so the trees and other plants will begin receiving the message I'm sure. It is a lovely poem, and I'll certainly share it at school. Thank you!
DeleteSuch a lovely treat to read this poem on the verge of bidding August goodbye and welcoming a new school year!
ReplyDeleteIt's nearly a prediction, Tara. The high today was only 71 degrees! But warmer is coming again-a quirky day!
DeleteSo, so, lovely! Love the line: "See that leaf, with the tiniest hint of something other than green?" Change is in the air. Fabulous poem, Robyn and thanks for sharing, Linda! = )
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, it's a pleasure to share it!
DeleteI love the whispering voice of the poem, the promise of things to come. It's glorious. It moved me deeply today, dear Linda. I love the anticipation of golden bright tree colours after August. :)
ReplyDeleteAs you see I said earlier, we are having a cool spell now. It's about 60 degrees this evening! Robyn got it just right, didn't she?
DeleteThe swapping poems sounds like so much fun! I wish I could come up with some poems to contribute, because it sure sounds like it would be fun to be on the receiving end!
DeleteI think you would be great, Carol! Next time?
DeleteLove, love, LOVE those last four lines!
ReplyDeleteI agree, just beautiful!
DeleteBEAUTIFUL poem and presentation, and yes, perfect for going back to school!
ReplyDeleteIt will guide us for a long while!
DeleteI have nothing further to add! The last line is a killer! Happy school year!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Diane. So glad you enjoyed it!
DeleteBeautiful poem - but I'm still not ready for fall. Let me hold onto August a little longer!
ReplyDeleteI know how you feel, but with school starting, we seem to turn that way, don't we? Robyn seems to say it's just hint so far. Thanks, Matt!
