Highlighting A Book About To Be Born!

         NO! All these books are not about to be born. Only A Rock Can Be will arrive on your doorstep (if you've pre-ordered) on March 1st. But maybe not, since March 1st is Sunday, but nevertheless, be sure you order it now! Water Can Be and A Leaf Can Be have been out a while, and they are marvelous. 
            I am a big fan of the poetry of Laura Purdie Salas’ work, and when she asked if I wanted to see a copy of this latest in her “can be” series, I immediately said YES. Along with the beauty of the words, these books, including the new A Rock Can Be, show how much we might be missing by ignoring these lovely things in nature. 
            The breadth of possibility lives in all the books, but today, let's focus on this new one. Laura shares the kinds of rocks that are found and used in nature, like chickens who use small pebbles to help digest their food, “food grinder”, and also the numerous uses in our lives that people use for both play and creating: “Lake skimmer” and “Building trimmer”. She includes a tiny group: “Desert dune”, and then the lovely, “Harvest moon”.  
             Additional information for each kind of rock is in the backmatter, along with a glossary of terms. Again, Violeta Dabija gifts Laura’s words with gorgeous and dreamy illustrations, ones that make us look and look again, making her beautiful visual connections with the words.  It’s another wonderful book of poetry that arrives this coming Sunday, March 1st.

    I never thought about rocks quite like this but will be on the look out for this book. I loved the other when I read them and was amazed by how much I learned. Thanks for sharing and reminding.
