This special Monday, ALA awards-so exciting!

This week it seems I’ve found more than one picture book for younger children, all fun, all simple stories that make one laugh and look forward to the next page!

Sometimes You Barf – written and illustrated by Nancy Carlson
The end papers are filled with small pictures of all kinds of animals, including humans and snowmen, who look a little like, well, they’re going to barf. Funny book that I’m sure the young ones will love. My granddaughter, five, talks with real seriousness about throwing up, has the right bucket and everything ready sometimes. This story centers on a little girl who is at school when that awful flu bug hits, and another poor girls runs to hide in her locker. Others hang out and watch. My only problem with the book is the attitude is that school is bad, and in a way, the girl is lucky to get sick and miss school.

Alphabet, Under Construction – written and illustrated by Denise Fleming
This seems like such a simple idea, finding verbs that are action words to “build” each letter of the alphabet. When reading, began to imagine what Denise Fleming would choose for Mouse to create the next letter. The full-page illustrations fill the reader with Fleming’s great imagination.  The A is airbrushed, the M is  measured, G is glued. You’ll need to find the book to see what she does with Q. What a fun book for little ones!

Hooray For Hat! - written and illustrated by Brian Won
I smiled all the way through! I know I’m late in reading this book, but so glad I found it waiting on a library shelf.  Elephant wakes up grumpy, but finds a box on his doorstep with a stack of hats. Big smile, and no longer grumpy. He runs to find zebra, also grumpy, so elephant gives zebra one of his hats. Zebra is no longer grumpy. It’s a delightful, happily illustrated progressive tale that pleases on every page. (I also love the grumpy looks Brian Won gives the characters!)

Chengdu could not, would not fall asleep - written and illustrated by Barney Saltzberg

With double pages, and elongated pages, we move through a part of the night watching Chengdu, a darling panda bear, try to get to sleep. I think we’ve all been there tossing and turning, and then finally, finally, in a special place, he does. Unfortunately, all problems are not solved because of Chengdu’s choice of this “special place”.

Still Reading--Port Chicago 50, at school, & now Going Over by Beth Kephart! I've nearly finished both, and both are so good. I'm on my way to my state reading conference on Thursday, the day Fish In A Tree comes out, so will definitely find it and start reading!

  4. Wonderful selection of PBs, Linda. I need to get Chengdu. That's how I myself feel sometimes! I think I could relate....The cover of the barf book cracks me up. Might need to get that one to share in my Children's Lit class where I'm always looking for unusual books! Hooray for Hat is really lovely, isn't it? I read it very quickly at a bookstore and would really like a slower second read.

  8. I wish I had time to read your blog while I was at work. We have Alphabet Under Construction there. I can't wait to read it tomorrow after reading your review of it. Hooray for Hat sounds just like the kind of book I need today. I'd like a box of hats to cheer me up after struggling with technology at our school.

  11. These look like some funny books. I have read Chengdu - I love books about bears for some reason. I read another book about barf, but for older kids. Kids are always curious about some bodily functions and I'm glad to see they are writing books about them - wish I had had some growing up.
Port Chicago 50 was a real favorite of mine. It's a real eye-opener.
    Enjoy your reading week.
