Poetry Holiday-For Me!

Join all Poetry Friday bloggers at Cathy Mere's blog, Merely Day By Day, today. I have a winter break starting today, and after this past week of celebrating our big Expo of learning, I am ready.
Valentine's Day, that day of red things: hearts, chocolate in foil, blushing lovers, lollipops, glitter...

I have many old Valentine's from my mother-in-law, who saved much, and I am grateful that she did. She was one of those teachers who taught in a one-room school house after high school until she married. This Valentine is one page that appears to be what a student pulled from a book, and made the cuts to further decorate it. I hope all of you receive a few "sweet" Valentines this Valentine's Day.

Many of you know that I've taken over a classroom, former classroom, same age-mixed group of middle school students. I am busy! But I have taken time to write poems in honor of Laura Shovan's birthday month challenge, and this participation makes me both inspired by those others who are writing, too, and happy to keep writing a few poems myself. It's a delight to see what one sound means to others.  Here is the link at Author Amok's blog, days eleven and twelve, from sounds of two birds this time. Check the link if you'd like to try it.

  1. Linda, your two poems on Laura's site are wonderful. Mockingbird and Ted Talks - clever while the eagle poem is a sensory treat: No screech from eagle owls at night,
they do not need such noise... I hope that winter whispers to you amidst the sound poems.

  3. Linda, last night when I started writing my poem I began with a poem about a Valentine I received in elementary school hand-made for me. I kept that Valentine, and other little memories, in a cardboard box. When we moved years ago, the box apparently got placed in the trash instead of the moving van. How lucky you are to have this collection of old Valentines. I did scan the internet for Valentines by decades and it was quite fun to look at how they have changed --- much like candy hearts. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Sorry you've lost yours. I don't believe I have any personally, but a small group from my mother-in-law as I said. They are sweet & yes, Valentines have changed, are changing! Thanks for hosting, Cathy.

  4. Those old Valentines! Love them! They were so much more fun than the superhero, video game and Bratz Valentines of today. We labored over which Valentine to give to which friend...

  7. What a precious keepsake from your mother-in-law, Linda. I read your Mockingbird poem while listening to the bluejays outside my window. I've been listening to all of Laura's sounds, and hope to join in at some point. Good for you, for keeping up with everything!

  9. Forget the candy hearts and glitter, I like the kind of valentine in your photo – sweet sentiments from memory's garden. I loved reading your poems on Laura's blog, especially the owl poem with the repeated line "while flying with the boys." Really good stuff. I thought I would be able to join in with that challenge, but I don't know. It's not looking good. :(
