SOLC # 17/31 - Green Scene

Also blogging with my students at Linda & Jonathan's Class Blog

Day Seventeen, sliding downward, of the Two Writing Teachers Slice of Life Challenge.  Tweet at #SOL15
Thanks to Tara, Dana, Anna, Betsy, Beth and Stacey for hosting!

Well, it is St. Patrick's Day, and here are my favorite green things, and the picture that inspired me. I was looking for another picture with a key word that has nothing to do with this picture, but saw this, and decided to celebrate green. We don't have a green river in Denver, but we do have the second largest St. Pat's Parade in the US.

And no, I'm not Irish. Both sides of my family came straight from England a long time ago. But I do like Irish writers, Irish blessings, and the color green. Top o' the morning to ye!

May you always have walls for the winds,
a roof for the rain, tea beside the fire,
laughter to cheer you, those you love near you,
and all your heart might desire.

At first I started a list of many things, but I could have written for a long time, and it wasn't fun, was just a list that was difficult to end. Instead I compiled my very favorite things that are green, coming immediately to mind. I imagine you have a few special things that you would name, too.

cucumbers, avocados, granny smith apples, honeydew melon, key lime pie
green grass growing, tiny evergreen cones
           parrots and red-eyed leaf frogs
a green dress that my youngest granddaughter wears
a comfy pair of green sweatpants
the green of both the ocean and the sky during storms
four leaf clovers, Mr. Greensleeves, Green Eggs And Ham
           It's Not Easy Being Green

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

  1. What a great green list idea and shades of green display. We share some of the same favorites. Happy St. Patrick's Day to you, Linda. My family is Irish (there are a few Spillane relatives living in Denver even). Today is the one day of the year my Dad will revert to a brogue--always loved it.

  3. I'm having a green smoothie for breakfast today! Green because of the spinach I put in it...cucumbers came to mind for me, too. I had a falafel sandwich over the weekend with tomatoes and cucumbers in it. I'm in a food kick. :) I love this as an idea for a free writing prompt because so many things come to mind - and maybe some interesting things to put together for a poem or story. Happy St. Patrick's Day!

  4. I like your list. At first I thought mine wouldn't have much on it, but green food adds instantly several items. My favorite green is the color of fresh leaves on a birch tree in spring.

    1. It's a color that even artists cannot achieve, don't you think? Thanks, Terje.

  7. I like your list of green things. To my list I would have to add a Watergate (pistachio) cake. And let's not forget lime jello with pears. Sorry, I tend to get fixated on food.

    1. I nearly put pistachios on my list, but they aren't my all time favorite. Your cake sounds divine, however. I'm not so sure about the jello.

  9. Green has always been my favorite color. Emeralds were the gems I desired because they were green.

    1. We just had the Cartier exhibit at our art museum, awesome jewels, & yes, there were emeralds. Would be lovely to have a pair of earrings wouldn't it?

  13. Now it's after midnight, so I'm late to wish you a Happy St. Patrick's day. Your list is a fun idea, Linda. I'm not a huge fan of green, but I do love green grapes and can't wait to see a hint of green grass!
