Still learning about writing haiku, still wondering about the words chosen, and those leftovers that are challenging to give up.

Ingrid comes home with me after school every Friday. Today, we spent time in her classroom because she wanted to share her newly published book, and READ it to me. She is a beginning reader, and was so proud to show this latest book, with a few words easier than last time. She's on her way. Her wonderful teacher, my long-time colleague and book buddy, sneaked a few pictures of us. Here I am adding the first comment in Ingrid's book. Celebrating reading and friendship!
Most of this week was filled with school.
- Slam poetry presentations, wonderful poems by 10 teams. All the class also are writing in
- poetry and prose groups, and we had our final sessions Friday. What gifts these writers already have, possibly because
- most of them completed the March Slice of Life Challenge! When you write every day, your writing improves, and you learn important things about your craft, experimenting without even thinking about it. You also get to go to
- Starbucks! My colleague whose class also did the challenge and I trekked to nearby Starbucks to treat those in our classes who wrote all 31 days. It was our final way of celebration. All of us
- celebrated last week with prizes for everyone.
- Wrapping up some things this week meant final celebrations of other assignments, because in a little more than a week we are going to Washington D.C. for a city trip, then off to the Chesapeake Bay area for country fun and challenges. It is going to be a marvelous adventure, so Friday
- we began some additional practice in field journaling. This time, the lesson was in capturing parts of a museum visit without trying to add every bit displayed. We journaled all over the school, using other classes' exhibits as museum displays. It's one of the biggest challenges in journaling on the trips, to enjoy what we see without taking too many notes, but enough to remember.
- CELEBRATING ANTICIPATION!
Have a terrific week everyone!
What a great picture and a wonderful celebration of writing. Somehow, I suspect Ingrid has an amazing writing model!
ReplyDeleteThanks Anita, it was a special moment to capture.
DeleteLove that pic of you writing in Ingrid's book. Oh, I want to be in your classroom. Those lucky students, to be nurtured and stretched in lovely ways by your able prodding! I love the way you used other classes' exhibits to practice field journaling. And these words: "...journaling on the trips, to enjoy what we see without taking too many notes, but enough to remember." I really think this deserves a post all its own someday.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ramona, the week was so busy that I wondered if we would get everything done, yet we 'almost' did. The special part really was sitting with Ingrid.
DeleteI love hearing Ingrid's stories. This is a lovely photo of the two of you! And Starbucks?!? What a great way to celebrate. I cannot wait to hear more about your trip to DC and Chesapeake Bay. It's one of my favorite spots in the country. And the opportunity for students to practice by journaling around their own city, this is just amazing.
ReplyDeleteI've been to DC, but never to the Bay area, am excited about that. Online pictures make it look gorgeous & now your words make it even moreso, Kendra. Thanks!
DeleteI love the idea of traveling around the school to practice field journals. So much fun writing to celebrate this week! I love the picture of you and Ingrid.
ReplyDeleteThanks Andrea, it was a good time all around.
DeleteI can't get past that photo - completely precious! Love that Ingrid is a writer and a reader and that she so happily shares her stories. Just wonderful!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Carrie, it is something to celebrate for sure.
DeleteYou make everything you do sound exciting and fun. I feel the jump in your step as you celebrate writing, yours, your granddaughters, and your students'. Looking forward to hearing about this trip to DC.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Margaret, always something good going on!
DeleteWonderful to read all the celebrations. The picture could be used to illustrate supportive reading partnership. But more than that it's a sweet picture of granny grandchild love.
ReplyDeleteThanks Terje, all of that and more!
DeleteWhat another special photo of you sharing your love of reading. It's always such a gift when we stop and celebrate thermal moments. Thanks for your support in Celebrating.
ReplyDeleteThanks Maria-good times!
DeleteWhile I love every word you wrote, that picture! Seeing you with Ingrid in such a candid shot is a real treat. Congratulations on so much writing success. Excited for you and your students' coming trip. DC is the best.
ReplyDeleteThank you Julieanne. I know it'll be a great trip!
DeleteYou're coming to DC?!?! You'll be in my neck of the woods!!!! YAY! I wonder if we'd be able to get a chance to meet up. I love seeing the pictures of you and Ingrid with her book!! So sweet!!! Safe travels! Sounds like an amazing trip!
ReplyDeleteWe'll be there the week starting May 5th, Michelle. I can send our itinerary, or contact you when I'm there. Can you send me your cell on my e-mail?
DeleteReading about your classroom and school makes me understand what schools without testing would be like. I am so envious! I love the picture of you and Ingrid! Being with her is something I am sure makes the end of the week look so sweet.
ReplyDeleteYes, it does, every Friday, Leigh Anne. It is a good thing to work at my school, but all of you in the public schools do many wonderful things, too.
DeleteGreat celebrations!
