Final Slice for April - Poetry & Trip Coming

Writing every day is a habit I won't break, but posting every day maybe.

        As I wrote yesterday, I’m leaving next Tuesday for a 10 day trip with my students to the DC/Chesapeake Bay area, so will take a break from posting. We're doing half the trip in the city, all the tourist places, including being admitted to the White House! The other half will be in nature, studying the Chesapeake Bay habitat, experiencing creek snorkeling, kayaking and zip lines, just the beauty of nature!  I'll try to continue some writing, certainly do lots of field journaling which we (students and adults) all do.  


        In addition to the all-encompassing organization of such a trip, there is a beauty to watching young adolescents grow a little in so many ways, socially, emotionally, mentally and  physically. During the day we visit many places, experience many things, and while we do, we journal to capture those hours spent in new places. Students do this in small groups, touching base with us adults periodically. We allow them the freedom to grow, and trust that they will learn about many things, including about themselves. I'll have lots to tell after the trip!

    Linda, your trip sounds so rewarding and fulfilling for the students. The extra bonus is that you watch them grow as they learn and share with each other. I love the idea that each student will have a field journal. At our state curriculum conference, we talked about the wonder of field work as opposed to field trips. Your field journal mimics that experience we learned about. Oh, before I forget, your haiku journey is so wonderful.

      All the students at our school use a field journal, Carol, from the youngest up. We feel it is the underpinning of the skills of good observation. Thanks for enjoying my haiku.

    I am so impressed you've kept up with posting this month!! I know this trip will be amazing. It's like a giant writing marathon!!! LOVE it! Hope you get to take some time to enjoy yourself too! Maybe meet a friend?!?! ;) LOL! Safe travels!

    I do not know how you do all you do! I am so impressed with your trip too....can't wait to hear about it from the eyes and ears of the teacher/leader!

    What a journey for all! These are the experiences that will remain in their hearts and minds for the rest of their lives. As for the bunny, not too happy to see it if that is your yard. Hope the nibbles are on weeds.

    Amazing that you still found time to post a lovely haiku! I love seeing the squirrels, birds, and rabbits this time of year - full of energy and life. Have a WONDERFUL time on your trip, and we all look forward to hearing all about it!

      Thanks, will do. The students had a big report due today per a trip topic, then tomorrow presentations. They are being tested in different ways, don't you think?

    Field learning as it should be. "We allow them the freedom to grow, and trust that they will learn about many things, including about themselves." This kind of learning lasts a lifetime and surely cannot be tested.

    10 days is an impressive amount for a school trip!

      We had to apply for the White House visit, & have waited for weeks to see if we were approved, & finally we were. I'll let everyone know how it is. I haven't been there in a very long time. Thanks Michele.

      I always think the city trips are the most physically rigorous (unless we're climbing a mountain!). Maybe you will see us? 22 students, 5 adults, here we come! Thanks, Maureen.

    What a lovely experience for all involved. I like that adults and students will all be journaling. It's good to take time to process all that you will be experiencing. Have a great time!

    Have a wonderful time, Linda! I was lucky to be a chaperone on our school's trip to Washington, D.C. several years ago, and it was an incredible experience for everyone. I haven't enjoyed the nature of the Chesepeake, but that sounds like a wonderful opportunity. Can't wait to read all about this trip!

    10 days is a long trip -- I hope you aren't too worn out by the end! We live in the D.C. area and looove visiting the touristy things. Hope you have a wonderful time!!
