Hard to believe it's already been a week since the final SOLC, and some of us are still writing every day. Also, many Poetry Friday bloggers are beginning challenges for the month, and others offer invitations to write along with them. I may join them sometimes during the month, but my goal is to work hard to write haiku and haiku-related poetry this month. See my latest below.
I'm also happy that some of us are sharing on twitter with the hashtag #DigiPoetry, created by Margaret Simon, of Reflections on The Teche. You're welcome to join us. Find the many Poetry Month offerings rounded up by Jama Rattigan at Jama's Alphabet Soup. If you want to see some lovely poetry, go to Jama's post to see everyone's plans.
Today, I'm also visiting Michelle Heidenrich Barnes at Today's Little Ditty with a clerihew, her guest host, Kwame Alexander's April poetry challenge. And my poem is the first one this month! If you want to see Kwame's interview and all about the challenge, look here. You should try it! And if you haven't read this year's Newbery winner The Crossover by Kwame, find it and read it! It's wonderful.
I'm back from break, the week has started our long slide down to the end of the year, and many kinds of projects are happening, including creative writing and poetry groups along with celebrating the many students who also wrote every day for SOLC. Only a few missed a few days. I'm very proud of them.
In the midst of the beautiful spring break weather last week, we had snow Thursday night, hence this latest haiku.

snow
shadows again
blossoms tighten their hold--
no open window

You have captured such a magical nature moment here. Soon, open windows...shadows on grass...hope blossoming. And I love that I will see it all happen here on your blog. xo
ReplyDeleteApril can be mercurial, & we can have more snow! But the flowers are on their way, some already blooming! Thanks, Amy.
DeleteWhat powerful personification--love the image of the blossoms tightening their hold.
ReplyDeleteThanks Maya. This has been such a challenge, to use few words for the picture.
DeleteThe blossoms are holding on. Not letting go of winter! Great line. Thank you for the link to Kwame and Today's Little Ditty.
ReplyDeleteAND congrats to your students. Well done!
Thank you! In between all the work beginning this week, we will do some celebrating too! I am proud of their work!
DeleteI love winter and snow, but as more snow fell here on the weekend, I started to wish for the open window feeling! :0)
ReplyDeleteI like the line "blossoms tighten their hold" too.
Thanks, agreed that the open window is just wonderful.
DeleteI love a great haiku- great imagery!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to your students!
Thank you. I'll share your congratulations!
DeleteI'm visiting all the slicers who entice me with poetry posts this morning. I hope your windows will be open soon, but without that last burst of snow, we wouldn't have this lovely haiku. So fun to soak in poems every day this month.
ReplyDeleteAmazing poems happening in many places, Ramona. Enjoy your tour! And thanks!
DeleteI worried on Thursday night about all the tulips and daffodils in my neighborhood! Surprised how many are still ok, after a couple of days of sunshine.
ReplyDeleteIt seemed to be just enough moisture to help everything, now rain coming, a good thing! Thanks, Carol.
DeleteKeep that wonderful poetry challenge coming. I opted out this year, but I'm feeling a bit out of it. Loving my photo challenge :)
ReplyDeleteBonnie K.
Thanks Bonnie. Will look for you!
DeleteI am excited because Kwame Alexander is going to be a featured speaker at our PCTELA conference in October. Really loved his book and can't wait to hear him.
ReplyDeleteHopefully now the snow is gone and the blossoms can unfurl in all of their splendor.
That's great that you'll get to see him. We have some rain coming which is very appreciated, & I now am seeing the lilacs blooming-very beautiful!
DeleteYou are so busy writing plus teaching full time! My hat is off to you! There is nothing like shadows on the fresh snow. At least snow doesn't last long in April. Soon the windows can open again and bud loosen their grip.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Elsie, yes, very busy, but most of it is fun too, just don't have enough hours in the day!
DeleteI hope we are through with snow for this year (fingers crossed) but our blossoms are tightening their hold through rounds of thunderstorms this week. I tried writing some clerihew last month. They were such fun to write, but more challenging than I expected.
ReplyDeleteI hope the snow is over, too, Kay. We have a little cold coming this week, but not that cold! I agree, the clerihew was not so easy. It was a challenge choosing a topic too!
DeleteSo much packed into those words. "No open window." Sadly, our windows are shut now because the temps are reaching 80+ so AC is one and will probably run through until November.
ReplyDeleteI've had a couple of days that I thought about the AC, but will wait until I'm driven to it. Yes, you have very different climes, Margaret. Thanks!
DeleteI love the "blossoms tighten their hold" line! I feel like I am tightening my hold when I'm doing outdoor recess! I know how those blossoms feel :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Michele, you did make me laugh about 'tightening the hold' at recess. I understand perfectly!
DeleteSo vivid Linda...I can visualize the tiny buds trying to protect themselves from the spring snow! Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThank you. They must do that, don't you think? Otherwise, how could they make it?
DeleteLinda,
ReplyDeleteI love the tightness of haiku. You captured the image of lingering cold beautifully.
Thank you. It was an image I thought showed this odd spring of ours well.
DeleteJust when we think spring is on the horizon, THIS happens. Winter is tightening it's hold here tomorrow too.
ReplyDeleteWe will be joyous when at last it's over, I know. Thanks, Stacey!
DeleteLinda, your ability to capture the moment is evident with your lovely haiku. I was delighted to see it here and then featured on Michelle's blog. Two for one today.-a bonus! I am just on the other side of the stomach bug so back to designing the gallery.
ReplyDeleteHappy to hear you're better, Carol. Thank you!
