Wednesday-Lots Happening

          One of the poets doing something special this month is Laura Shovan, of AuthorAmok. She's putting on party clothes this month and inviting others to write and share poetry connected in some way to clothing, and today is my day to visit.            For this wonderful month of April, Poetry month, I've made the goal to write haiku and haiku-related poems. It's been rewarding to write something new every day.

          Most Wednesdays I'm happy to link to Alyson Beecher's Non-Fiction Picture Book Challenge at her blog, Kidlit Frenzy. There are fabulous picture books available about many varied topics, for all ages, too. Here are a couple I read and enjoyed recently.

 Eggs - written by Marilyn Singer & illustrated by Emma Stevenson

           Much information lies in this book, and it is creatively offered along with the beautiful illustrations by Emma Stevenson which extend the word descriptions. When Marilyn writes about the forms, she also tells about the wide variety of colors that eggs can be. And beside the words are beautifully artistic examples by Emma Stevenson, both salmon eggs, memorable blue robin eggs as well as the varied colors of the common murre.  Some are camouflaged, some not.  Inforamtion and pictures of the nests that protect eggs are described, what they look like, where they are found, and how made. It is a gorgeous non-fiction book for those who want to know all about eggs!

Up in the garden and Down in the Dirt - written by Kate Messner & illustrated by Christopher Silas Neal

             Each time I read another of Kate Messner’s books, I want to run out to find more of them. She is a storyteller extraordinaire, and this book about a garden is so entertaining, I want to run right down to the nearby garden store and begin. Or I want to go dig in the dirt to discover all those intriguing creatures “under” and “hiding”, doing their work. The book takes us through the year, from the first planting and getting ready, to harvest, then eating soup while everything underneath is curled up under a blanket of snow, sleeping till spring. Neal’s illustrations are big and bold, with colors fitting the seasons.
