This past Monday my mailbox held a wonderful poem by Diane Mayr, who has given me permission to share the words she wrote for me, paired with my own photo posted last autumn. What a surprise! The personal quality is special, a magical returning to that evening immediately.
Fall Sunset: A Tanka/haiku Sequence
house lights on
I see your silhouette
at the desk
...you tell me the sun
sets every day
the joyous noise
of roosting sparrows
...not larks
but an exaltation
nonetheless
sunset...
the traffic tie-up
much too short
cell phone
I learn to use its camera
tonight
the magnificent sky will
not wait for competency
they fall
in a blaze of glory
autumn's last leaves

Thanks for the creative way you connected your poem to me, Diane, and the beauty in the words. ~Linda
Ahh! Beautiful.
ReplyDelete"the magnificent sky will/not wait for competency" -- painfully true, that!
It's rather like nature is thumbing her nose at us, isn't it? Only Diane shows that attitude much more beautifully. Thanks, Tabatha.
DeleteThanks for sharing Diane's beautiful sequence of poems. Like Tabatha, I loved the cell phone camera tanka. The one that begins with "the joyous noise" also caught my attention for its play on animal collective names.
ReplyDeleteYes, that 'exaltation nonetheless' is wonderful for the sparrows, too. Thanks, Laura.
DeleteThanks for sharing my sequence, Linda. It is nice to know that sunsets inspire the same thoughts all across our nation!
ReplyDeleteSo right. We are sure to watch every night when we go to the beach! Thank you again, Diane.
DeleteI love this! What a fun project and delightful gift to receive poetry. Love the fiery sunset inspiration too.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Katie. It is a wonderful thing for sure.
DeleteWhat a lovely thing to do! I especially like the first two tanka. That silhouette announcing the sunset is a great image. Thanks for sharing your gifts with us!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Andi. It is a lovely poem, I agree.
DeleteI love this:the joyous noise

In these quiet summer days, I learning to notice all sorts of exaltations - from the grand and the not to grand: lark and sparrow alike. Hope your summer is going well, Linda.
Thanks, Tara. I do appreciate hearing all the sounds, too, from those raucous magpies to the sweet chirping robins. Diane's poem reminds. I am in the midst of trying hard to get rid of lots & lots of books. When that is done I think I'll be able to start the rest of the summer. Love seeing your pictures. Wish I could beam right over for some iced tea!
DeleteThe photograph and the words, such a gorgeous combination! Exaltation is a word that fits perfectly here!
ReplyDeleteIt was such a thoughtful gift. Thanks, Carol, glad you liked it.
DeleteBeautiful picture, and so richly enhances the mood of the words. Love that the sunset waits for no cellphone competency, nor does traffic delay lengthen to accommodate us!
ReplyDeleteWhat a precious treasure from Diane!
Sorry I'm late by a day. Yesterday was sooooo busy, I'm trying to make up for it today in the Starbuck's climate controlled environment!
And I'm late seeing this, Donna. Thanks for coming by to see & read Diane's poem. Nice to be at Starbucks!
DeleteThe words and image pair beautifully!
ReplyDeleteI know, isn't it lovely? Thanks, Mary Lee.
DeleteDiane's words capture the "blaze of glory" in your "magnificent sky" perfectly!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Catherine.
DeleteThis is really beautiful. I love the way Diane captures your image and thoughts and ties them to the picture. What a wonderful gift!
ReplyDeleteIt is, isn't it? Thanks for coming by to see and read, Dori!
DeleteBeautiful, Linda - but I really don't want to think about autumn yet!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely, no autumn is even close! Thanks, Matt.
