Today I have the pleasure of sharing a new book in the Pout-Pout Fish series by Deborah Diesen with illustrations by Dan Hanna. The title: The Not Very Merry Pout-Pout Fish. The Macillan Children's Publishing Group (publisher - Farrar, Straus & Giroux) - is generous enough to offer a giveaway of this title, US citizens only, sorry. I reviewed the first Pout-Pout Fish book when it first came out, and have since given a few others as gifts for young children. Thanks to Farrar, Straus &Giroux for this review copy.
Deborah Diesen writes the stories in rhyme, just right for reading aloud. And Dan Hanna's expertise in cartoon-like drawings adds extra fun to the read aloud. The illustrations are bold and colorful, each page filled with briny detail, like imagining dear Pout-Pout lamenting his problems to a sympathetic sea star leaning in to listen well. While the ocean creatures aren't exactly realistic, they do exhibit the correct shapes and relative sizes.

In this Christmas story, Pout-Pout is on the search for the perfect gifts for all his friends. Sadly, by the time he thinks of something, those "somethings" are all gone. Sometimes, Pout-Pout arrives just as a store is closing. And then, he's down to the wire with no presents at all. The ending soothes with the way everyone should think when looking for a perfect gift, as written by Diesen, "And a gift should have meaning/Plus a bit of bling-zing" Pout-Pout realizes the real meaning of gift-giving through advice from a dear friend fish, Miss Shimmer.

Sounds like the book has a good message. Something important to remember over the holidays. I like the "plus a bit of bling-zing" part!

DeletePout Pout Fish books are a lot of fun :) My favorite holiday book is still The Polar Express though. I know it is a bit cliche, but I love the message :)

DeleteFats enjoyed Pout Pout Fish - I think she featured that a few years back - is it open to US residents or only citizens? Because Fats, i think, would be good with this if it's the former. :)

DeleteLinda, this book seems to be filled with just what a child would like to hear. When I was in the classroom I loved reading holiday books to the children who were delighted with the different tales. Proomf was one of the children's favorites.
