taking a pause this day: writing instead of watching
It’s certainly winter.
Winter sits right there on the wall calendar-
January.
It sits outside, too. I see it through the window,
that snow spurt of flakes
that snarls the morning traffic.
It diminishes by nine,
clouds drift east, sunshine takes over.
It’s January, yet the mercury climbs
to fifty, no sixty, maybe sixty-five?
I’m being teased by weather gods,
a January trick.
Sweeping outside, I stoop along the walks
to check the beds.
It’s tempting to imagine a bit of green.
Of course, that would be the second trick!
It’s really winter;
I need to wait a little longer
for spring.

Beautiful Linda. Keep writing while you're waiting. Down under I am hoping the weather doesn't change for quite a while.
ReplyDeleteI imagine you are hoping that, Sally. I know it's summer there. I wish you one full of warmth and fun!
DeleteGlobal warming in balmy January. Hard to think about the polar bears on a beautiful day.
ReplyDeleteIt is a usual thing here inJanuary. The usual winter weather will return!
DeleteFantastic. You had me at "right there on the wall calendar" There's humor in this. It's latent and under the lines...but there. Even though this is a winter poem and you are waiting for spring. Your smile is just starting to stretch. I love it! Have a great week. I wish you time and inspiration for writing.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Linda. Will read some PF posts, and enjoy my day!
DeleteDear Linda -it's been a January trick here as well.. January dressed up as March. I've been wearing flipflops all week. Thank you for your poem! xo
ReplyDeleteWe've been in t-shirts, not quite flip-flops, but now cold today. Love that "January dressed up as March."
DeleteWe get those odd winter days, too, that lull you into a false sense of spring - it's actually sunny here today, but I know it's just January playing a little trick on us, because the rain will be back before you know it!
ReplyDeleteI guess it happens to all of us, Jane. Perhaps it's a little promise for spring?
DeleteOh yes, this January weather has been tricky. We started with rain instead of snow, but the warm temps are tempting me, too!
ReplyDeleteI know! I want to spend a lot of time outside!
DeleteIt's really winter is a great line to work with, Linda. I hope you continue to write to brighten our days.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Carol, it was a lovely day writing, then with Ingrid and finally with my daughter Sarah and Imogene.
DeleteI love this poem. So you! Noticing and noting the every day. Our January days are climbing high into the 70's. Not sure where January is hiding.
ReplyDeleteIt is hiding, but I hear snow is coming the middle of next week. I am glad our mountains are getting lots of snow, good for the skiing!
DeleteI love the image of you, stooping to check your flowerbeds in January. That miracle does happen in some places (like here on Canada's southwest coast). The first winter I spent in BC, I lived in a basement suite which had a flowerbed outside my bedroom window. I couldn't believe it when I saw crocuses coming up in January.
ReplyDeleteWow. I'm glad you shared that story. It can happen early here too, but not in January. Thanks, Violet.
DeleteWe've had warm weather too. Love your poem. It's so spot-on! And the language is beautiful! The second stanza is fun to read with all the "s" sounds.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Penny. I really wanted to capture this time.
DeleteLinda, I am waiting with you! We have been having a false spring here in Texas for sure. I'm quite tempted to plant some seeds!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kiesha. I imagine that winter is going to return. We have a few months left!
DeleteLet's imagine that bit of green, Linda, in the beds and in all parts of our lives. It may feel like snowy Narnia for awhile! I couldn't keep from reading your poem with an eye on the current climate.
ReplyDeleteYou are perceptive, Joyce. I did mean that too, but also it's the truth about our recent weather. What a time!
DeleteIt sounds as though your winter is imitating our Caribbean winter! Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ruth. Sometimes it does happen like this!
DeleteWe haven't gotten your snow (it is rain by the time it gets to us) but the thermometer is playing games with us, too!
ReplyDeleteIt certainly IS winter...and we have another big storm on the way here! I can totally relate to your poem, Linda.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mary Lee and Matt. Still rather warm this week, but winter returns with snow mid-week!
ReplyDeleteHi, Linda. I love the idea of winter *sitting.* Yes -- perfect personification for how a winter day feels.
