At Grandma’s
We played mostly in the alleys,
hiding in the shadows of backyard sheds,
running down the dirt track
between the weeds.
I was Dale Evans;
Gary was Roy Rogers.
Fake leather belts held the holsters
for the shiny silver cap guns.
We chased train robbers
just like Dale and Roy.
Pop, Pop came the smell of summer.

I love this! My mom used to have a cowgirl outfit when she was a little girl, and I picture her in it as I read your lines.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ruth, I'm not surprised. It was one of the popular things to do!
DeleteYour poems this month are triggering all kinds of memories of my youth. I might have to write a poem about my grandmother's hollyhocks soon.
ReplyDeleteYes, they were many places in my childhood, too, Cheriee. I hope you do! Thanks!
DeleteI remember the red paper rolls of caps. We used to slam the spots with a rock to make them bang! I wonder if that was dangerous?
ReplyDeleteNah! Couldn't have been. Too small a charge, and if there's anyone who could get hurt doing it, my brothers would have.
DeleteCaps are about the only thing they didn't get hurt on!
I don't think so either. We used rocks or hammers to set them off too. I don't remember anyone getting a burn, like with firecrackers.
DeleteI had a real black leather double holster and 2 ornate silver "cap gun" revolvers with fake pearl handles. I wasn't Dale though. Once Bonanza came on, I was Adam. I was a cowboy, and we watched all the cowboy shows.
ReplyDeleteYep, one of my grandfathers loved Bonanza & I know I watched with him. Love hearing about your own western wear, Donna.
Delete"Hiding in the shadows of backyard sheds." Time playing in the old neighborhood is full of memories, for sure. I think I'm going to have to check out the book you are using.
ReplyDeleteIt's great, Cathy. I hope you do check it out. Thanks!
