Afternoon on The Roof
The town-grandparents’ house
offered a low, slanted roof,
the roof over the cellar door,
an invitation.
My friends and I kept
an old chair to boost us up.
On lazy summer afternoons,
prescribed rest time,
we’d lie there sky-gazing,
whisper-giggling at our jokes,
naming the cloud animals,
safe in our secret place.

Such a lovely, peaceful snapshot! I love "whisper-giggling!"
ReplyDeleteThanks, Carol, it was a good place to be.
DeleteThis one brought back memories of climbing up on our patio roof. It was peaceful up there, but there was also such a sense of power being high up over everything.
ReplyDeleteYes, you're right. Being able to actually "be" on the roof was powerful. Thanks for that added feeling, Jama.
DeleteWhat a great experience and memory!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jane, happy times, especially on warm days!
DeleteI love this!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ruth
DeleteI probably said this already, and will probably say it again, but I love that your memories in these poems trigger experiences from my own past. We used to climb out my grandmother's attic window, across the neighbour's roof, and steal cherries from their tree.
ReplyDeleteOh, that's wonderful. I know that climbing out on a roof is a big deal, for us and recently Ingrid climbed out on theirs to help with Christmas lights. She was so excited she got to do it! Thanks, Cheriee!
