The Youth Media Awards are this morning! It's exciting to imagine which books!

#MustReadin2020 number two! |
I imagine Aven Green will continue to have power over those who want to take her down, but not without terrible hurt and worry. Starting high school is a huge thing for every.single.student. Now, Aven is starting, this time without Connor who's moved across town, but still with Zion, sticking with her through everything. And yes, there is a lot of "everything" in Dusti Bowling's new, again heartbreaking and heartwarming story about Aven's growing up. It's a book that I hope gets into the hands of every young teen, offering hope and a whole lot of powerful words to remember.
Fun books for the little ones! They're cute with surprises and beautiful to see!
I have a granddaughter who loves jumping on beds, just like Little Snow. His mother has made such a wonderfully warm and puffy feather bed for him, and it's perfect, for jumping, especially when he's sure his mother is not around to hear. There is a fun surprise at the end, too. It's a darling and pretty book all by Grace Lin.
Another surprise lies in this book, too. It's fun, a mystery, and what a surprise! Collaged illustrations are gorgeous! The endpapers and double spreads are awesome!
Mixed media illustrations by Gus Gordon make the story by Minh Lê "just right". These two do a search for the 'perfect seat' where they can read a story together.
I'd had this way too long and enjoyed it. Lisa Rogers tells her own imagined story about William Carlos Williams and that well-known red wheelbarrow with the white chickens. It is a story to admire, and she includes much that is true, like the neighbor who's a good friend, Mr. Marshall, does have a red wheelbarrow that he used to cart around to sell vegetables from his garden. And he does have chickens. But the poem is what William Carlos Williams notices and one can bring one's own meaning to the poem, as we all might when we read it and others. Chuck Groenink's illustrations help tell the tale in the calmness of their muted colors as you can see a touch of on the cover. Rogers adds her own note, a brief bibliography, and a few titles of poems by William Carlos Williams to enjoy. This would inspire a wonderfully interesting conversation about reading poetry.
Well, I loved Thank You, Omu, so knew this would be a wonderful story. I read it to my granddaughters last week and it got them talking about the special times they have with their own mother. That is what this one is about, the carefully planned day, the best thing is being together. A few things happen that force some changes. Still, the only thing that really matters is "the day" and "together"! We not only loved the story, but we also looked at those collaged illustrations, too. They are beautifully done. Oge Mora uses "pieces" of paper to create her pages and they are masterful!
Now Reading: The First Dinosaur by Ian Lendler. It's taking me a while, but it is fascinating. It's told as if I'm listening to someone sitting right beside me, and learning a lot!
I will be adding all of these to my TBR! I have One Fox out from the library right now--but I haven't read it year. I LOVE that it is billed as a "Counting book Thriller"!!
ReplyDeleteIt's very cute, Becky. In fact, I loved all these picture books! And the chapter books, all great. I hope you enjoy them, too!
DeleteOne Fox is one I haven't read, but it sounds intriguing!
ReplyDeleteIt's a cute, beginning mystery for the young readers, Lisa. Very fun!
DeleteListening to Momentous Events now ...loved the first one. Saturday is one of my go-to mentor texts for K-4 this fall. So much to love about it! I love all the titles you have shared. Added Torpedoed to my TBR list!
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoy Momentous Events. I did! And I loved Saturday, a loving story & gorgeous art!
DeleteI loved Momentous Events and it is never in the library so good thing I read it before starting its circulation journey. I will add many of your picture books including One Fox and The Perfect Seat. Thanks for the post!
ReplyDeleteFun to hear about the love for Momentous Events, Aaron. Me, too! Enjoy those picture books!
DeleteI didn't get into Torpedoed. maybe because I was reading it on my phone.
ReplyDeleteIt took a while to get into the "real" story for me, too, Earl, but the actual disaster & the rest was good and so poignant.
DeleteI haven't read Torpedoed yet, but I'm looking forward to it. The story of the City of Benares is so heartbreaking. Have you read Lifeboat 12? I'm also liked Momentous Events, but I'm partial to the Arizona desert, having live there for four years. Thanks for sharing all these great books this week.
ReplyDeleteI have Lifeboat 12 on my list, but will wait a while. There was quite a lot about it in Torpedoed, too, so I know about it, but know a different story will be interesting. I love visiting the desert. How great that you lived there for a while. Thanks, Alex!
DeleteI just placed requests for A Big Bed for Little Snow and Saturday. They both look awesome. Thanks for sharing and have a great week!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Jana. Hope you have a great week too & enjoy those books!
DeleteI'm familiar with all the books except One Fox. Currently reading Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus since it's on the March Book Madness list for this year. It will be fun that my readers can move right on to the sequel.
ReplyDeleteIngrid & I have loved Dusti Bowling's books, hope you do, too, Ramona. One Fox will be fun for that older grandson! Thanks!
DeleteI adored Momentous Events and was deeply stirred by Torpedoed. But there are some here that I can't wait to read, like 16 Words and Saturday! Off to see what I can find, locally. Thanks for the shares, Linda!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy those two, Shaye! I know you loved the others, pushed me to read Torpedoed earlier than I might have! It is terrific!
DeleteOooh! We both featured A Big Bed for Little Snow - isn't this adorable? 16 Words and Saturday sound like my kind of books - sadly, we still don't have it here in our library. :( I hope I can find them via my Singapore subscription tho on Overdrive.
ReplyDeleteYes, I loved A Big Bed for Little Snow, a sweet story & so beautiful to see, too. Hope you can find those others. Thanks, Myra!
