Poetry Friday is with Heidi Mordhorst HERE at her website, My Juicy Little Universe, carrying on with her Inklings and folktales. Thanks for hosting, Heidi!
Don't forget!
Early Morning
I went out on this day
without sun.
The wind crackled the leaves
that have settled another layer
in the garden -
again.
I peek at the place I know ants live.
A lone ant carries something white,
another creature’s egg?
Can it be feeding its crew?
I watch this brave insect escape into the crack.
You know how people write
To be a certain someone
who does good?
Be that one ant!

Ah to look from an ants eye view and bring about some goodness, and inspiration too–good idea! Hope the sun peeks out a bit, I hear snow has come your way, hopefully not too much, thanks Linda!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Michelle. I was amazed to even see an ant still out. And, yes, we got a couple of inches, then back warmer this next week. It is pretty and I made it home from the bookstore with only wet streets!
DeleteDear Linda, YOU are a good ant. Thank you! xo
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Irene. I was so happy to find a poem outside!
DeleteLove this sweet, inspiring poem, Linda. We are on the same wavelength with ants :D. Ants are fascinating creatures, how they communicate and work together. And they serve a Queen (as it should be). ~ Jama
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jama, I guess we both wrote about A(u)nts! : )
DeleteLinda, I notice that you are developing a distinctly Rumi-esque voice these days--and I intend that as a high compliment! Although...too bad for the egg and the one who laid it!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Heidi, & you are right about thoughts for the egg. I actually tried to include it in some way & couldn't make it work.
DeleteOh I love that crackling sound and your picture is so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteLinda, oh to be an ant full of kindness for his kin and friends. What a great message your poem reveals. Autumn is rich with layers of crackling leaves in your garden. I am once again enjoying beautiful autumn days after last week's cold spell.
ReplyDeleteLots of layers to this poem, Linda, like those layered leaves... thanks for your thoughtfulness & generous spirit. xo
ReplyDeleteYour poem reminds me of the letters I wrote for Vote Forward. That ant taking care of others.
ReplyDeleteThanks, everyone! I've been out since lunchtime, will be sure to visit those of you I haven't yet tomorrow! Enjoy your weekend!
ReplyDeleteA big life lesson from a tiny creature, Linda. How wonderful and transformative our observations can be if we are keen eyed. I felt the word 'again' was heavy with significance. I felt the connection as one who lives with leaves. Well done on voting. Turning out to vote is critical to a healthy democracy. In Australia, voting is compulsory, but I know I would still vote if it wasn't- it's that important!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know about your voting rule, wishing that could be here! Too many people sit it out! Thanks, Alan
DeleteLove your 'I voted' sticker. it's got that Colorado vibe to it. Be that one ant! Is a perfect way to leave this poem. Bravo!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Linda. The sticker comes from Colorado when we check to see if our ballot has been counted! It is fun to receive. Another one comes when you take your ballot to a dropbox or vote on the 8th.
DeleteLinda, I love the sense of connection you have with your world--how the leaves are coating the ground "again" and how you know where to look for the ants.
ReplyDeleteI love this: "I peek at the place I know ants live." and YES to Colorado's "I voted" sticker!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Molly and Mary Lee, I do love being outdoors, know quite a lot about my own garden/lawn, like those ants. Molly, I raked & filled six paper bags today. They are big and to be taken to our leaf drop site, then turned into mulch which one can pick up free for the garden in the spring!
ReplyDeleteSo atmospheric, Linda. Something about the "again." And we need so many ants right now, don't we? Worried...
ReplyDeleteThanks, Laura. Hoping good will come on Tuesday!
DeleteI love your ending! Thanks for the early morning peek under the leaves.
ReplyDeleteWhen we were in Costa Rica this summer, I saw leaf cutter ants in the wild. Ants are so fascinating!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Rose & Margaret. We saw those leaf-cutter ants last summer in Costa Rica, too. They were everywhere, working hard!
ReplyDeleteLinda, your poem made me smile. "Be that one ant!" indeed! Thank you for sharing! :)
ReplyDelete"Be that one ant!" Ah, yes, that's the goal!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sarah & Karen, I imagine you & all will be "that one ant", makes me feel good!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your Early Morning poem, Linda. I love the last stanza, and especially the goal it sets in the last line. Thanks for being that "ant."
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Carmela. I'm glad you enjoyed the sentiment.
