April - Poetry Month - Day Nine - Iamb

  

       Happy Poetry Month, where poems parade in the streets, run like rivers within our veins or settle in our hearts every.single,time. 

       I am planning to use this older book pictured left that follows the alphabet with one kind of prompt each day. I used this book on occasion in the classroom years ago, but never worked through it day by day, with deliberation! Here goes!

      This Easter Sunday challenge: I is for Iamb

What Is Iambic Meter? An iambic meter is the pattern of a poetic line made up of iambs. An iamb is a metrical foot of poetry consisting of two syllables—an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable, pronounced duh-DUH. An iamb can be made up of one word with two syllables or two different words.

        Because it is Easter, a special day for Christians and re-birth, we know that spring is on its way, I looked for something my granddaughter Imogene loves and searches for this time of year, among other insects, a praying mantis. She seems able to spot them easily while I find it harder. Here is one gorgeous photo I found on Wikimedia Commons.

Mantis Habit

 

The mantis preys 

in leaves of green,

then calculates

a change of scene.

 

He’s slow to go

from branch to bloom;

but contemplates

arrival soon.

 

His patient moves

reward him, too;

there on his plate,

a meal to chew.
